African Cichlid Talk / Breeding Frontosa
« Last post by cramer74 on January 06, 2016, 05:28:00 pm »
Im going to start a Frontosa tank for breeding. Any suggestions of how I should go about it. I have three young ones under 2" but would like to get some older so I dont have to wait years. Do you think a 75 gallon is big enough to breed them in.
Thank you.

African Cichlid Talk / 210g Stocking Suggestions
« Last post by Raymond Sugel Sr on January 06, 2016, 12:05:09 pm »
Currently have a 210g modified reef ready aquarium (removed overflow towers and replaced with H2Overflows from CustomAquarium.com) with a 50g sump containing 1g MarinePure spheres (500g capacity) and an 12" x 12" Algae Turf Scrubber.  Lighting is a 10,000k single LED fixture.  The tank started as a planted discus display tank but has regressed into a South American community tank.  I'm making a change over the winter to an all male Malawi tank.  I've kept Africans in the past (many, many, many moons ago) but only in single specie breeding set ups.  This will be my first attempt at an African "community" tank.  I'm using the CaribSea "salt & pepper" substrate and holey rock.  Back glass is painted black.

I'm looking to stock this with Malawi species (adult size 4" - 6").  I prefer more medium sized rather than fewer monsters.  I've watched John's 3 part video on purchasing, and love the 240 tank in the background, as well as his video on his stocking "equation".  I'm not looking to breed so an all-male set up would suit me fine.  There will be some scavengers (synodontis & ancistomus).

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ray

Hello All,
Just joined the group.  Been in the hobby on and off for the past 50 years.  Currently have a 210g modified reef ready aquarium (removed overflow towers and replaced with H2Overflows from CustomAquarium.com) in my office that started as a planted discus display tank but has regressed into a South American community tank.  I'm making a change over the winter to an all male Malawi tank.  I've kept Africans in the past (many, many, many moons ago) but only in single specie breeding set ups.  This will be my first attempt at an African "community" tank.

A few general breeding tips:

1) A species only tank is probably the way to go for a peacock breeding setup.

2) Male to female ratio is important. 1 male to 4 or 5 females is about right most of the time.

3) When the fish have reached maturity. A large water change with cooler water can help to induce spawning.

It's best to do some homework on the particular type of peacock you plan to breed.

Good luck!

American Cichlid Talk / South American Cichlid tank setup
« Last post by oifwarvet on December 25, 2015, 03:47:45 pm »
My name is Ronnie. Watched just about every KGTropicals video on youtube and wanted to ask my question here because I like John.

I have a 75 gallon bow front rr aquarium with a 20 gallon sump. I am converting it to freshwater. I know, I know.......my wife and I are having a baby and salt is just too much to keep up with. I am wanting to set it up for South American cichlids.

few questions.

1. I am making the sump a refugium and am wondering if that is going to be enough filtration. I know it was great for my saltwater, but not sure exactly how well it works for freshwater.

2. How many South American cichlids might I be able to put in this tank?

3. Will I need anything more as far as filtration goes? I've read mixed reviews so would like to know what rel people might say about it.

Thanks for your time.

I am currently interested in breeding African Peacock Cichlids. I don't have any experience breeding them so if anyone has any advice and experience in breeding them please comment below or private messaging me. I also want to know what kind of setup is recommended for breeding Peacock Cichlids. Thx.
