Community Fish Talk / Discus

I've been planning on getting 4 snow white discus, but I've heard that if you feed them anything with red pigment it will change their color. What should I feed them to keep them white?

Tank Set Up / Re: New 75 gallon discus tank!

I would pass on the shark, the discus will not like their activity, and watch the chinese algae eater as they are known to suck the slime coat off fish.

Tank Set Up / New 75 gallon discus tank!
« Last post by Dappled Light on January 19, 2016, 07:10:43 pm »
Hello everybody!

I recently bought and set up a 75 gallon tank, and has just about finished cycling with 1 male dragonscale betta, 1 cardinal tetra (I had more but they died) and one Siamese algae eater. Soon, I will be adding 4 Kuhli Loaches and a rainbow shark. I started planting the tank with cabomba and it is my goal to make it resemble a route from Pokemon. (What can I say?)
I don't have any good pictures yet, but I'm looking forward to finishing the project! Since the tank didn't come with a stand, I built it my self. I was thinking to add 5 discus, 4 snow white and one with lots of color!
Also, I plan to use my soon to be empty 28 gallon bowfront to house a pair of axolotls. If anybody has any experience with axolotls or discus, I would love to hear it!

Any suggestions on the color of the last discus would be great!

Introduce Yourself! / Re: Hello from Puerto Rico

I would use a capful of SeaChem Prime daily until you see ammonia and nitrites at 0 and nitrates starting to go up, do not clean your filters until then. Prime makes ammonia and nitites unable to hurt the fish but will still show on tests. Good luck, and Tank Talk has a facebook page and thats where most people are communicating

Introduce Yourself! / Hello from Puerto Rico

HI my names is luis,  i am starting in the hobby. i say this because a use to have a 20 gallon tank with  3 angels
17 years ago, they where with me for arround 3 years.  and now i bough a 60 gallon tank 2 month ago, and i am really lost. I am having some problems. so i been seen the videos from KGTropical and i know you guys can help because they say the things has they are!  So  i am here to learn. than you!

Like i said, I have a 60 gallon tank tall, 2 marineland pinguin filters, 1 is a 75 gallon filter and the other is a 30 gallon.

Now, it was stupid of my part not to inform my self before starting the new tank. so i did not let the tank cicle complete, i know, i know but i am trying and doing everithing i can to save my fish. reading doing 50% water changes, using water conditioning , etc. at this moment they are fine, they are not showing symptoms of amonia toxification or anithing like that. some of them have like a month with me and they are fine, they are eating, swiming normal.  well the thing is i have been doing water test and the las one have me puzzle!

this is the reult- PH BETWEEN 7.0-7.2 / AMMONIA 4.0 / NITRITE 0 / NITRATE 0 .  HOW CAN THIS BE AND MY FISH ARE DOING FINE?

Sorry to post this here, but i did not know where to post it. I really need some advise please . I dont whant to lose my fish beacause of my mistake.  Than you!

African Cichlid Talk / Re: Breeding Frontosa

Buy the time they are breeding size, or if you introduce larger mature fish, I believe they're going to need much more swimming space that what a 75 can provide.
If you keep a very close eye on things, there is away's a chance.

Best of luck,
Paul

In the shape he's in now.. not much you can do really.

He needs to be in his own tank, which helps keep the rest of your fish from getting whatever he has.

My guess is that he's suffering from Neon Tetra Disease, or even worse Fish Tuberculous.  Both these diseases can cause in later stages, a curved spine.

Best of luck to you and your fish!

Over the past two months we have lost 3 fish in our tank. We have lost all three in the same way. Before I start let me fill you guys in with my tank parameters.

13 gallon Wide Screen Aqueon tank (This is the pre-packaged starter kit)
The Ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite are "Optimum"
The tank has been cycled for 5 months we had this problem in the past 2 months
There are currently two black mollies, a mickey mouse platy, two red platies and a SwordTail (The one that is currently dying)
(I know there are too many fish in there. They are all small currently and will be moved to a bigger tank in a year or so)
We feed them the Aqueon brand flakes

Currently, the SwordTail is having trouble swimming, is lethargic (Sometimes, other times it acts like the attached video) it doesn't eat, and has a "bent spine" (Also shown in video)

As mentioned before, these symptoms have shown in the previous fish that died. They start with the "broken" spine and swim up and down. They bloat around the dorsal area and then are lethargic. They usually die within the week after these symptoms show.

I really don't want the rest of the tank to die from this. What can I do?
